VermontBiz by Timothy McQuiston Bennington County is traditionally viewed as two separate regions, the South Shire, anchored by the town of Bennington, and the North Shire, with Manchester at its core. Traditionally, the South was the historic colonial town once visited by Thomas Jefferson that eventually became a manufacturing hub. The North Shire featured tiny towns that became quite literally a destination of the rich and famous.
