FIREFIGHTERS: Flames burn tobacco barns in Calypso
CALYPSO, N.C. (WITN) - A Duplin County barn catches fire early Thursday morning. Faison Fire & Rescue says crews helped Calypso Volunteer Fire Department put out a fire burning tobacco barns this morning. Photos shared by Faison Fire & Rescue show heavy smoke and the grounds surrounding the building charred.

Fire departments respond to tobacco barn blaze in Calypso
Fire crews with Faison Fire and Rescue helped crews in Calypso put out a tobacco barn fire on the morning of Thursday, May 30, 2024. Duplin County officials tell us that Calypso Fire Department was dispatched to an agriculture barn on fire. Faison Fire along with Mount Olive and Smiths Chapel responded with mutual aid. Crews stayed on scene for approximately 2 hours. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
N.C. Specialty Mental Health Probation aims to improve outcomes for people who have serious mental illnesses
Jason Szybka became a probation/parole officer in Duplin County in October 2020. In the role, he crossed paths frequently with people with serious mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. He saw how their mental health affected their lives in the community and their ability to meet supervision requirements.
