Great Bend to consider legalizing golf cart use on city streets
The Great Bend City Council will be presented a motion at next Monday’s meeting to allow golf carts on certain streets within city limits. In January 2020, the city began distributing plates and tags for the legal use of Utility Task Vehicles (UTV) and side-by-sides. Citizens approached administration requesting the city allow golf carts as well.

Great Bend students awarded bikes for perfect attendance
Twenty-five elementary students, and one preschool student, earned a set of wheels this week, achieving perfect attendance for the 2023-2024 school year. The Perfect Attendance Bike Program has awarded bikes for over 13 years to encourage students to attend school every day in Great Bend USD 428 elementary schools. Assemblies were held at all 5 elementary buildings to celebrate the students’ accomplishments with their peers, teachers, and families.

GBHS's Vocational Tech Club finishes third in race for state title
Electric car racing at the high school level is a little like golf in that the lowest score wins. Great Bend High School's Vocational Tech Club recently finished third in a series of three races that determined a state champion. Travis Straub, the woodworking teacher at GBHS and club sponsor, gives credit to his small team of juniors Matthew Williams and Alex Allen, and sophomore Josh Manning, who drives the car.
Great Bend announces mosquito spraying schedule
Great Bend city crews are preparing to start fogging for mosquitos again. The city has plans to fog on the following dates: May 23, May 30, June 6 and June 13. As with years past, the city will start spraying at 8 p.m. until midnight. The public is encouraged to take precautions to limit exposure to themselves, especially those with medical issues and pets.

Beckham sets school record, Lady Panthers secure fourth straight regional
The Lady Panther track and field team's run of three-straight Class 5A regional titles was in jeopardy heading into Thursday's regional on the new track at Great Bend High School. The Lady Panthers led Salina Central by just half a point heading into the final race of the evening. With no real threat from the Mustang 4x400m relay, Great Bend cruised in one of its signature events to secure the regional title with 95 points. Central scored 86.5 points for second, and Hays placed third with 81.5 points.
Ohnmacht, Panther 4x8 team claim regional championships
A regional title was out of grasp at Thursday's Class 5A meet at Great Bend High School, but the Panther boys still qualified for state in several events. Hays, Goddard, and Valley Center scored 120, 104, and 103 points, respectively, to run away with things. Goddard-Eisenhower finished a distant fourth with 48 points, and the Panthers scored 35 points for ninth.
Mailbox vandalism in Bissell's Point in Barton Co.
The Barton County Sheriff’s office is seeking information in reference to multiple cases of vandalism on NE 30 Road, in the Bissell’s Point subdivision. At about 1 a.m. on May 9, 2024, unknown persons damaged approximately 15 mailboxes in that area. The Sheriff’s Office believes individuals were on foot and were in the area for an extended period of time. The damage is estimated to be greater than $2,000.
