Martinez breaks 300 yards; Buhler avenges loss to Great Bend to advance

BUHLER, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - As the rule goes, it’s tough to beat a good team twice in the same season. Great Bend, in its return to Class 4A, defeated Buhler 33-22 on a rainy night in week four of the season. The Crusaders kept things close despite four turnovers. In Friday’s playoff game on the same field, the Buhler offense was nearly perfect. Junior Landon Martinez rushed for 350 yards and four touchdowns as the Crusaders advanced with a 49-12 win.

Buhler Thumps Great Bend 49-12 in a Tale of Two Halves

Buhler headed into the locker room with a 7-6 lead over Great Bend in Friday night’s regional matchup, but there was a sense of unease in the stadium. On their opening possession, the Crusaders drove to the doorstep but came away empty after successive plays from the 4-yard line. They found the end zone on their second possession when senior fullback Asher McConnaughey punched it in from 2 yards out.
