Darrell M. Collins Highway honors Wright Brothers historian

At its monthly meeting in Raleigh on Nov. 5, the North Carolina Department of Transportation announced a resolution officially naming a five-mile stretch of highway in front of the Wright Brothers National Memorial after historian Darrell M. Collins.

7 sentenced in Oct. session of Superior Court

Seven people whose cases were investigated by the Elizabeth City Police Department entered pleas during the October administrative session of Pasquotank County Superior Court, according to a police news release issued Friday. The defendants, charges and sentences: • Javier Nehemiah Griffin: disclosure of private images. He received probation. • Xavier Rashawn Brinkley: possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of cocaine. He was sentenced to 15 to 27 months. • Malachai Jaheim Cooper: discharging a weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was sentenced to 29 to 47 months. • Lamar Rashard Jones: common law robbery. He received a suspended sentence of 13 to 25 months and 24 months of probation. • Sara Whitney Neff: possession of a Schedule II controlled substance. She received a conditional discharge with probation. Jesean Robert Brown: possession of a firearm by a felon. He was sentenced to 15 to 27 months. • Franklin Glenn Hunter: obstruction of justice and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance. He received probation. The news release did not include the defendants' ages, hometowns or street addresses. New Alligator River Bridge construction passes halfway point

Construction on the new Alligator River Bridge is more than halfway complete, with crews using new materials and technology to keep the project moving. The new bridge will replace the Lindsay C. Warren Bridge, a swing-span crossing on U.S. 64 between Dare and Tyrrell counties. NCDOT says the replacement will be a fixed-span, high-rise bridge with two 12-foot travel lanes and 8-foot breakdown lanes. The current bridge was built in 1960.

A hat trick of accomplishments

Two county commissions and a town council each had individual meetings last week and together the results of those meetings have accomplished a hat trick in the goal department. Now we’re not speaking of a Gordie Howe hat trick — a goal, an assist and a fight in one game — we’re talking about three local governmental bodies achieving major accomplishments in the same week. That’s commendable. Last week, Bertie County, Martin County and the town of Edenton, each took steps worth celebrating. Bertie County cut the ribbon on the Taj Mahal of local animal shelters, Drew Batts held a well-attended community forum in Martin County and the Edenton Town Council came steps closer to a healthy choice for residents craving new flavors at a new local grocery store. Bertie County Manager Juan Vaughan, former Assistant County Manager David Scarborough, Commission Chair Corey Ballance and the entire Bertie Board of Commissioners deserve high praise. The new animal shelter project is completed and the shelter will soon be open for business. The project had been on the drawing boards for over three years. Candidates work polls in final hours of Election Day

With 90 minutes left before the polls closed Tuesday, three candidates were still working the parking lots, shaking the last hands of a campaign season that one of them said never really shuts off. Two of them worked the parking lot of Evangelical Methodist Church, 820 Okisko Road: Timothy Stallings Jr., a first-time candidate for the at-large seat on the Pasquotank County Board of Commissioners, and Sam Davis, a candidate for N.C. House of Representatives District 5. Davis, 73, owns a local real estate company. He served one term as a county commissioner, from 1998 to 2002, and was appointed to the board again in 2023. He currently holds the at-large seat Stallings is seeking. At 6 p.m. Tuesday, Davis hurried to greet voters and the children who came to the polls with their parents. “The turnout has been steady. We’ve seen a lot of voters during this campaign,” Davis said. Stallings greeted voters as they walked toward the entrance and as they left. When he approached one voter and called out, “Good to see you, preacher,” the man paused, laid a hand on Stallings’ shoulder and offered a 15-second prayer.
