Canes softball improves record to 12-0
The Hayward Hurricanes softball team picked up two more wins last week, 12-7 over Cumberland and 14-6 over Barron, to improve their record to 12-0 in conference play and 14-4 overall. Mitchell Nelson, 18, of Boy Scouts of America Hayward Troop 70, earned his Eagle rank on April 20, 2024. It was the culmination of many years of work towards his Eagle Scout rank, which approximately only six percent of Scouts ever earn. Northland College sees two more coaches resign
Two more coaches have resigned from their posts at Northland College. On Tuesday the school announced Jakob Wohlford is stepping down as their head men’s lacrosse coach. Wohlford departs after two years leading the Lumberjacks. He also played four seasons of lacrosse at Northland, and holds the record for most career points with 143 from 92 goals and 51 assists.

Kurtzweil appointed as Town of Hayward chairperson
Meeting in special session Wednesday May 1, the Town of Hayward Board of Supervisors appointed Benjamin Kurtzweil as interim town chairperson. Kurtzweil fills the vacancy created by the resignation of interim town chairperson Gary Gedart, which was effective on May 1. Kurtzweil will serve for one year, until the April 2025 election. Ziigwan Run Series underway
The first event in the Ziigwan Bimibaatoo Spring Run-Walk Series was held Wednesday May 1 at the Honor the Earth Pow Wow grounds. There was a nice turnout, with 46 participants who enjoyed the new trail course this year. Josie Nelson won the event in 7:46 and Brandon Belille came in second in 7:52. The series will continue each Wednesday through June 5, with registration at 4:30 p.m. and the run-walk at 5 p.m. Fees are $5 for adults and $1 for students. New trail in Tripp Township tells story
The Evelyn Goldberg Briggs Memorial Library, in partnership with the Iron River Fish Hatchery, has installed a story trail on the .57 Bobcat trail that is located about a quarter mile south of the intersection of Fairview and Weidenaar roads in Tripp Township of Bayfield County. Duluth, Minn. - Starting Monday, the Munger Landing Boat Launch and parking lots will be closed through Thursday, May 23. The closure is due to paving work and other restoration efforts. The DNR will also be installing a new fishing pier. Work is part of the ongoing effort to delist the St. Louis River as a Great Lakes Area of Concern due to past pollution.
