    Canes softball improves record to 12-0

    The Hayward Hurricanes softball team picked up two more wins last week, 12-7 over Cumberland and 14-6 over Barron, to improve their record to 12-0 in conference play and 14-4 overall.

    The Canes continue in first place in the Heart O’ North Conference. 2 1/2 games ahead of second-place Northwestern.

    Brooke Laier pitched the win at Barron May 3, giving up five hits while striking out six.

    Colby Sprenger slammed a two-run homer and scored three runs, Madi Bergschneider had two hits, and Laier, Alli Coddington, Greta Woelber, Leah Swan, Nikki Miller and Sophie Marino each had a single.

    On April 30, the Hurricanes defeated Cumberland at Diane Hedin Field. Brooke Laier got the win, giving up three hits while striking out five.

    Colby Sprenger had two hits and Laier had one hit.

    Heart O’ North Softball Standings: Hayward, 12-0; Northwestern, 9-2; Spooner, 9-4; Barron, 8-3; St. Croix Falls, 7-4; Cameron, 4-8; Cumberland, 4-8; Chetek-Weyerhaeuser, 4-8; Ladysmith, 1-11; Ashland, 0-10.
