Buyer for historic log cabin in Dover Twp.'s Community Park comes forward.

For a moment, it appeared the high bidder for the historic log cabin in Dover Township's Community Park had bolted.

The township put the cabin up for auction earlier this month and as of earlier this week hadn't heard from the highest bidder on an online auction service who had pledged $1,550 for the structure. The online auction had closed on May 6.

The bidder, identified as Braxton Weinhofer, contacted the township Wednesday, according to township manager Laurel Oswalt. More information about Weinhofer and what his plans may be for the cabin was not available.

One thing is certain: He will either have to move the cabin or dismantle it. The cabin, determined by a structural engineer to be unsafe for occupancy five years ago, does not come with the land on which it sits.

The cabin had been in the park since the 1980s, when Dover Township acquired it from Manchester Township. The cabin, which dates to 1744 and had been sheathed in siding, had stood off of Black Bridge Road when it was discovered. Since it was in the way of development, Manchester Township sold it to Dover Township, which installed it at the park as an event venue.

In 1999, though, a structural engineer deemed the cabin was no longer safe to be occupied. Repairs and renovations would cost much more than the township afford. Complicating matters was that the cabin is in a flood plain, requiring even more work to bring it into compliance with codes.
