Kevin Bui , a Denver, Colorado teen who set fire to the wrong home, killing an innocent Senegalese family of 5, over a stolen iPhone, has pleaded guilty and is now facing 60 years in prison.
According to the Associated Press , the Denver teen was involved in an August 2020 house fire that killed a family of 5, including two young children. Bui, who was 16 at the time of the incident and now 20 years old, took a plea deal and pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder on Friday (May 17). As part of the deal, Bui faces 60 years in prison, 30 years for each count. The maximum penalty for each count is 48 years and a $1 million fine.
Bui was the last of three people found responsible for the crime to face charges. In February 2023, Dillon Siebert , who was 14 at the time of the incident and now 18, was sentenced in juvenile court to three years in juvenile detention after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. In a separate hearing in adult court, he was sentenced to seven years in a state prison program for young inmates. If he violates the terms, he will be required to serve 26 years in prison.
In March, 19-year-old Gavin Seymour , who was 16 at the time of the incident, was sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of second-degree murder.
Again, all three were teenagers at the time of the tragic incident, however, Bui has been prosecuted as an adult after being portrayed by prosecutors as the ringleader of the house fire set on August 5, 2020. Sentencing for the Denver teen has been set for July 2.
AP reports that Bui told investigators that he initially targeted the family of 5’s home after someone stole his iPhone in City Park, CO. Bui said he used an app to find his stolen device but wrongly traced it to the innocent family’s address on Truckee Street. It was confirmed that the innocent family of 5 killed in the house fire had no ties to the Denver teen’s stolen iPhone.
The victims have since been identified as 29-year-old Djibril Diol , 23-year-old Adja Diol , and their 22-month-old daughter Khadija Diol . Other family members killed in the blaze were Djibril’s 25-year-old sister Hassan Diol and her 6-month-old daughter Hawa Beye . It’s also reported that three other individuals were able to escape the fiery blaze by jumping out of the home’s second-floor windows, which resulted in them suffering broken bones.
AP reports that each 30-year count was charged per family, one count for Djibril, Adja, and their daughter Khadija and another count for Hassan and her daughter Hawa. The Denver teen had 60 other charges against him, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, arson, and burglary, but they were dropped by prosecutors upon Bui accepting his plea deal.
