California high school suspends football program after alleged misconduct caught on video

A California school district has canceled all remaining varsity, junior varsity and freshman football games and practices at one of its high schools following allegations of misconduct involving members of the varsity team. One team member was arrested in connection with the alleged misconduct. Officials overseeing Fred C. Beyer High School of Modesto also said that varsity head football coach Mike Young was placed on administrative leave late last week after Beyer administrators received reports of cellphone videos involving the alleged misconduct. School officials contacted law enforcement, and Modesto police investigated the allegations, reviewing video evidence that resulted in one juvenile being cited for misdemeanor battery. “We are deeply troubled by allegations involving members of the Fred C. Beyer High School football program,” the Modesto City Schools district said Friday in a statement. “These allegations are extremely serious and have no place in our schools or athletic programs.” The decision to suspend the football program eliminated last week’s set of games and another this week. Few details about what led to the decision have been released. Officials, for example, have not explained whether Young’s administrative leave was related to allegations against him personally, his supervisory responsibilities or another reason. The

‘We want to see change': Merced voters make their voices heard

The line to enter the Vikram and Priya Lakireddy Auditorium on the UC Merced Campus stretched nearly around the building Tuesday as a crowd of students waited to vote, many for the first time. Across the county, voters cast more than 42,000 ballots. More than 6,000 people voted in person on Election Day and, according to Registrar of Voters Melvin Levey, ballot boxes had to be cleared up to three times throughout the day. The last voters concluded just before midnight. Levey also noted the county received about 2,000 provisional or conditional ballots from people who registered to vote at the same time they cast their ballots. “We have to go through and check and make sure that the voter is eligible to vote in this election,” Levey said, which means confirming they have not voted in another county, are at least 18 years old, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Merced County. Those votes have yet to be tabulated, as they require extra processing time. UC Merced students talk about why they voted While waiting in line to vote, some UC Merced students reflected on the issues that brought them to the polls. From cuts

Modesto school districts' bond measures need 55% to pass. Here's what early update shows

Editor’s note: Election result numbers in the story will continue to be updated. The numbers in the graphic below are the most up-to-date. Of two Modesto school bond measures that need a 55% supermajority to pass, one appears to have won handily in updated unofficial election results posted early Wednesday morning. The other still needs less than a percentage point of additional support. Modesto City Schools’ Measure K is for only its high school district. In the first updated results, the measure has 58.5% support, or 23,848 votes. Opposition is 41.5%, or 16,884 votes. It would authorize the sale of up to $250 million in bonds by the district and “allow the district to issue additional bonds while extending the current bond tax rate paid by local property owners at a reduced rate of approximately $24 per $100,000 of assessed (not market) value,” according to the district website. The last time MCS passed a bond measure for its high school district was in 2022 with Measure L. About an hour after the polls closed Tuesday, Superintendent Vanessa Buitrago told The Bee via text message, “We must wait for all votes to be counted, but the early results are encouraging for

Playoff picture shapes San Joaquin County football rankings after Week 9

The latest San Joaquin County high school football power rankings are in. Each week, The Record will rank all 26 county teams while tracking how the landscape shifts throughout the season. It’s more than just wins and losses. Movement is explained. Results are detailed. Every ranking carries a reason. After Week 9 , here’s how everyone lines up. Movement reflects changes from The Record’s previous rankings . 1. St Mary's ( — ) (5-4) Another TCAL championship is guaranteed, but St. Mary's suddenly looks human. The Rams secured at least a share of their 12th consecutive league title by slipping past Tracy 14-7, with all the scoring coming in the second quarter. Yet, it was their third-closest victory during a 61-game TCAL winning streak, and the closest came just last week. 2. Edison (—) (7-2) How do you respond after coming closer than anyone to ending St. Mary's TCAL winning streak? By scoring 42 points in the first quarter. Edison wasted little time putting last week's heartbreak behind it, cruising past Kimball 68-0 with a running clock by the second quarter. The Vikings are currently projected as the No. 6 seed in Division I by MaxPreps. 3. Manteca (—) (6-3)
