Asheville Rail Corridor Gets $35.8 Million

RALEIGH, N.C. — The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the N.C. Department of Transportation $35.8 million for the Salisbury to Asheville rail corridor. The state release of October 30 describes the sum as approximately $36 million. The money is for development, final design, and construction, including work on more than 40 highway-rail crossing signal systems between Salisbury and Hickory.

Great Smoky Mountains roads have reopened. Others to close for winter

This story has been updated to reflect roads that reopened on Nov. 5. Cades Cove Loop Road, Cherokee Orchard Road and Parsons Branch Road are now open Nov. 5 after closing the day before because of gusty winds in the Smokies, according to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Cherokee Orchard Road and Parson Branch Road closed Nov. 4 due to gusty winds and downed trees, the park announced. A wind advisory was in effect in the area until 7 p.m. Nov. 4, according to the National Weather Service Morristown office. Cades Cove Loop Road also temporarily closed due to downed trees. In addition to weather-related closures, drivers should also prepare for seasonal road closures through the national park. When will some roads close for the season in Great Smoky Mountains National Park? As winter approaches, several seasonal roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are closing for the season . Heintooga Ridge Road closed on Oct. 31, and more closures are set to follow.
