Fleeing driver arrested at gunpoint following pursuit
The combined efforts of the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) and the Newport Police Department (NPD) were able to bring a driver who had fled the scene of an accident into custody after a pursuit. According to an incident report filed by CCSO Deputy Rodney Hazelton, deputies were dispatched Jun 6 to Heidi June Way regarding a traffic accident. Sunday storm topples trees, blocks road
A quick moving powerful storm swept through the area Sunday with the Carson Springs area taking a significant brunt of the storm. The Cocke County Fire Department reported responding to numerous areas of Carson Springs and Old Highway 411. The Cocke County Sheriff’s Office and Newport Utilities also responded along with area residents to clear Clevenger Cutoff Road, which had been blocked by a fallen tree. Vehicle, foot pursuit nabs wanted man on several charges
What began as an attempted traffic stop for a brake light infraction, turned into a multiple felony arrest June 7 in Newport of a man also wanted for vehicle theft. In an incident report from Newport Police Department Patrolman Eli Suggs, a vehicle, a GMC SUV, was spotted on East Broadway during routine patrol with a brake light violation. Suggs reports initiating his blue lights near Lakeview Street to stop the vehicle, but the driver, later identified as Deekota Price, 26, had other ideas. ...

'Everywhere You Look, UT' mural
NEWPORT — The artist who painted the mural by the courthouse is back in Newport creating a new artwork. Curtis Glover of Knoxville is painting one of the University of Tennessee murals, “Everywhere You Look, UT” on the side of the Aire Serv building in Newport. Glover explained he and his business partner put in a bid to complete the murals and he has done close to a dozen of the murals throughout East Tennessee. He said that an artist from Illinois has completed around 30 of them. The goal is for UT to get a mural in each of the 95 counties in the state. Glover said UT pays the artist to paint the mural. The murals are usually painted on buildings belonging to UT graduates. Glover had painted the UT mural on the barn off West Andrew Johnson Highway. The barn was destroyed in a fire at the end of 2023.
AAA: TN gas prices fall another 6 cents
Gas prices across the state continued to fall over last week, dropping six cents on average. According to AAA, Tennessee's gas price average is now $3.02 which is 24 cents less expensive than one month ago and 13 cents less than one year ago. The average price for a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline also saw a decrease in Cocke County.
