Scam alert: Text message leads to Brevard man losing $15,000
BREVARD, N.C. (WLOS) — A two-letter response to a text message led to a Brevard man losing $15,000. Marcos Meilan said it all started on June 1, when he received a text message claiming to come from Bank of America. The message warned Melian about a potentially fraudulent Zelle payment to a ‘Crystal Thompson’ in the amount of $7,500 – with two options: reply yes to approve the money transfer or no to dispute it.

Unexpected events have been befalling Canton, North Carolina, lately. On top of that, there has been a surprising chain of earthquakes shaking the town. As of June 6, The United States Geological Survey has recorded seven separate quakes beneath the town since May 23. The quakes have not caused infrastructure damage. The most intense was on June 2, registering 3.2 on the Richter scale, far outranking anything most Canton residents could define as normal.

APD Arrest Maggie Valley Man on Assault Charges
Asheville -- June 3, 2023: Asheville Police Department reported a Maggie Valley man was arrested Sunday, May 28, 2023. At approximately 8:20 p.m., officers from the APD responded to a call of a disturbance at a business that was located close to the 90 block of Biltmore Avenue. A customer at the business was being belligerent and refused to leave. Haywood denies request to lower mill’s valuation
CANTON — The formal shutdown of Canton’s paper mill will begin on June 9, with the first layoffs, Asheville television station WLOS (News 13) reported on June 2. “In the same timeframe, Pactiv Evergreen has argued the plant’s value should be lowered by millions, effectively giving the company a tax break, while bringing in less local revenue,” News 13 stated. “Lowering the valuation is up to Haywood County officials, who met Friday (June 2) to discuss the issue.
