Late-inning eruptions push Armuchee into GHSA 'Sweet 16'
Breaking in the future home of Armuchee High softball Monday, Indian bats took a few innings to wake up and start producing one run after another in both contests played against northern neighbor Chattooga High. In the end, Armuchee, the No. 5 seed in the Georgia High School Association Class AA softball playoffs, swept the doubleheader 9-1 and 13-3 to advance to the second round, which will take place in one week, also at home. That second-round best-of-three series that will start with an Oct. 19 doubleheader is against a fellow Region 6-2A member, Mt. Zion-Carroll. Like with Chattooga, Armuchee swept both regular-season games against Mt. Zion, both games having a five-run margin in favor of the Indians. Indians head coach Andy Henderson said the new all-turf field that will also stage Indian baseball games in the spring played well even though they worked to try to get the old field they had played on all season ready after a weekend of rainy weather. That wasn’t possible, however, so fans got a look at the new field and showed up in high numbers. Aubrey McConkey pitched a six-inning complete-game to start the doubleheader and struck out 12. The senior started

Blue Devils storm past Armuchee 49-0
The Model High Blue Devils have made it a habit to score quickly and score often in football games, and Friday night was no exception. For the fifth time in six games, the Blue Devils scored on their first possession, taking an early lead over Region 6-2A rival Armuchee HIgh and never looking back en route to a 49-0 domination over the visiting Indians. With impending stormy weather approaching Floyd County later in the night, Model was hoping to get out front early, build a big lead, and substitute liberally in the second half. Mission accomplished. “We had some early success on offense, and I was proud to see some guys score on defense, too. That makes it a lot of fun,” said Model head coach Jeff Hunnicutt. “We got a lot of kids some reps, and I was glad to see our guys handle their business. Hats off to our coaching staff, because we didn’t have a great week of practice, but I thought we executed pretty good when Friday night got here.” The Blue Devils (6-1, 3-1) not only scored on their first five offensive possessions, but they also added a pair of first-half defensive scores as well.

Whitefield rolls over Walker in Round 1
MABLETON — The Whitefield Academy softball team made its first trip to the state tournament last fall. The Wolfpack enjoyed the experience so much, they hope to now make it an annual occurrence. With an aggressive approach at the plate and an afternoon of solid pitching and defense, Whitefield beat Walker 16-0 and 20-0 on Monday to complete a doubleheader sweep in the first round of the Class AA-AAAA Private state playoffs. The ninth-seeded Wolfpack (21-7), who tied for first in the regular season in Region 5AA, advanced to face eighth-seeded Wesleyan next Monday with a berth in the state tournament in Columbus on the line. “We’ve been preaching to the girls about working on hitting the ball to the middle and to the opposite field because that’s what we’ll have to do against Wesleyan with their power pitchers,” Whitefield coach Mike Fuller said. “To be able to do that tonight, I was happy with our swings and the hits we got up the middle and to right field. We know we’ll have to do that against Wesleyan to have a chance. Our defense has been solid all year long, and that’s always an important element of the game. “Once

Waleska school named to National Register of Historic Places
The former R.M. Moore Elementary School building in Waleska is now part of the National Register of Historic Places. The Georgia Department of Community Affairs announced that the historic school building was one of four in the state that was recently added to the register. The former school building is located at 471 Grady St. in Waleska. The school opened in 1948 as Waleska Elementary School. In 1955, it was renamed in honor of local physician and school board president Dr. Russell Malachi (R.M.) Moore. The building housed classes and activities for first through eighth grade children until 1997. CCSD then used the building to house the Mountainbrook program now known as Tippens Education Center, which later moved to the former Tippens Elementary School and then to its current home, the former Holly Springs Elementary School, Jacoby said. It was a consolidated school, and the modern facility replaced five ungraded rural schools in the northwest corner of the county, DCA representatives said. "During this period, Georgia transitioned away from underfunded remote schoolhouses to support better-funded buildings, teachers, and separate classrooms for each grade level," DCA representatives said in a statement. "R.M. Moore Elementary School is the only school representing this

Warriors Drive Down Dragons 34-33
Sports – The White County Warriors were back in action last night in Jasper, going up against Pickens County in Regional High School Football. The Dragons were early on to the scoreboard, putting up the first seven points of the game, followed by a touchdown run by Gaines Clark, but a penalty on the play would call the score back for further play. The Warriors pushed and moved closer downfield, ending in a touchdown catch by Zach Godfrey to even up the score. Pickens County would immediately cancel that out with a kick return down the full field, putting them back ahead by 7. The Dragons carried that lead to the end of the first quarter.
