One key takeaway for each Gaylord-area boys basketball team in 2025
GAYLORD ― Happy Holidays, Gaylord sports fans. With the December 19 Snowday and gameday cancellations, Otsego County schools have officially reached the winter break. We'll get to know the winter sports teams a bit better in 2025, but we've already gotten our first impressions of area basketball teams in the past few weeks. Gaylord (3-2), St. Mary (3-1) and Johannesburg-Lewiston (0-6) have each shown improvement from the previous year to now, even if some of their records and results don't quite show it. Here is one key takeaway from each boys' basketball team in the opening weeks of the season. Deer, Glazier bringing playmaking from turf to hardwood Both seniors Cale Deer and Grayson Glazier had impacts during Gaylord football's 9-0 season, playing roles on offense and defense for new coach Matt Silsbury as the team made an improbable run to a Big North Conference title and a district championship appearance. Now, those two are having a key role on another team with another new coach, hoping to change Gaylord basketball's fortunes in the BNC. Deer has been a go-to scorer in the early going, putting up 13 points in a win over Bay City Central and 12 points in

Inland Lakes boys pull away at Pellston; Onaway, Mackinaw City prevail
PELLSTON – The Inland Lakes Bulldogs finally got tested this season. Facing the Pellston Hornets on the road , the Bulldogs started off lightning fast and built a big lead, but it almost slipped away because of inconsistent play in the second and third quarters. But right when they needed it late, the closers stepped up for the Bulldogs, who remained unbeaten on the season with a hard-fought 56-47 boys basketball victory in Pellston. We knew they would. This is always a hard gym to come to and play, and I just think that our boys, their athleticism kind of wore them down a bit. We found some good shots when we needed them. It was tough.” The Bulldogs (4-0, 4-0 Ski Valley) dominated the opening quarter, which included

Meet the GHT All-Area Football Team, led by Gaylord's Kaven Cole
GAYLORD ― The high school football season tends to be overlooked by some football fans, described as "too predictable" even by some who follow and cover the sport. Those who say that haven't spent much time in Gaylord, because high school football in Otsego County is anything but predictable. Not much could be known about a GHS team with a new head coach, a St. Mary team led by sophomores and freshmen and a Johannesburg-Lewiston team boasting a record turnout and newfound program-wide optimism. Almost no one lived up to outside predictions; the Blue Devils went 9-0 for the second time in three years, GSM went 7-2 and nearly scored 100 points in a playoff game, and JoBurg still struggled in the Northern Michigan Football Conference-Legacy Division. Menominee, Pewamo-Westphalia collide with trip to State title game on the line
MENOMINEE — The irresistible force meets the immovable object on Saturday at Gaylord High School, as the Menominee Maroons collide with the Pewamo-Westphalia Pirates in the semifinals of the MHSAA Division 7 State playoffs. The winner earns the right to face either Clinton or Schoolcraft for the Division 7 State championship at Ford Field in Detroit on November 30. For the Maroons, Saturday marks their second trip to the semifinals in three seasons. Menominee defeated North Muskegon 32-21 en route to the State title game in 2023. After falling to North Muskegon in the Regional finals last season, Menominee’s senior class, who were sophomores in 2023, are back for one more shot at hoisting the Maroons’ first State title in nearly 20 years. “Many of these kids were part of the team two years ago and then had another successful season last year that did not end the way that they wanted,” Menominee coach Chad Brandt said. “They came together and set some goals in the offseason and so far, they’ve done nothing but work hard to give them the opportunity that’s staring them in the face come Saturday.” Much like Menominee, Pewamo-Westphalia is a program rooted with a winning

Gaylord football lands five first teamers, 11 total All-BNC selections
Correction: The orginal stated four Gaylord players earned first-team honors when five did. The error has been corrected. There were a lot of questions about what the Gaylord football program would look like in 2025. Reasonable questions and concerns were present after going 3-6 in 2024, parting ways with coach DJ Szymoniak in the offseason and promoting assistant Matt Silsbury to the head coach role in late May. Wherever those expectations landed before Week 1, the Blue Devils certainly blew past those expectations by Week 9.
