From the Darkroom, a parade of goblins haunts the SMSU campus ahead of Halloween 1960
A diverse batch of costumed children spooked the Southwest Missouri State College campus on October 1960, a few days before Halloween. The children were participants in the traditional Goblin Parade, held each year by kindergarten students from the Greenwood training school. Before setting off on their march through Greenwood and SMS classrooms, the group paused for a quick photo with News-Leader staff. They traveled in silence — not even speaking to one another — in order to keep their identities secret. Apart from the goblins, the costumes included ballerinas, cowboys, a skeleton or two, and a few assorted ghouls, to name a few. That same day, Springfield Schools Superintendent Willard Graff announced that Halloween costume parades would be discontinued at several elementary schools. Graff directed that school observances be limited to assemblies and simple classroom parties without costumes. “We have been trying to play down observance of Halloween at school for fear it would overstimulate children into carrying over the observance into the community,” he explained. “For safety’s sake, we have said that the parades shouldn’t leave the school grounds.” This image is part of a much larger collection of historically rich photographs from the News-Leader’s photo archive. Local Lakes and Ponds to Be Stocked With Rainbow Trout Starting November 1
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will start its annual winter trout program on November 1, 2025. Nearly 9,200 rainbow trout will be stocked in four urban waters in southeast Missouri. The locations are Legion Lake in Perryville, Rotary Lake in Jackson, Sikeston Recreation Complex Pond, and Capaha Park Pond in Cape Girardeau. MDC Fisheries Biologist Salvador Mondragon said the program gives local anglers a chance to fish for trout in winter. Trout are not native to Missouri but can live in cold, stocked waters during winter.
