Local teams will be kicking tonight
Many local sports fans will be hitting the road tonight as the Grace Christian and Lee County women’s soccer teams both travel for state playoff matches. For Grace, a trip to what would be a third consecutive NCISAA state championship match is on the line. For Lee, the opportunity is there to continue the most successful season in program history, and even to make a run at a title itself. Both teams will step onto the field tonight as underdogs, but as very live ones with a real chance to pull the upset.
DOT projects to begin in summer
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has several projects that will begin in the summer that will impact Moore County. Below are the major projects:. N.C. 211 from U.S. 15-501 — Road widening is planned on N.C. 211 from U.S. 15-501 in Aberdeen to Mockingbird Hill Road in Raeford. It will expand the route to a four-lane divided road. Work is wrapping up to acquire right of way, clear roadsides and move dry utilities. The road work is scheduled for the fall and is estimated to take multiple years to complete as it involves 16 miles of roadway.

Taxi driver found with cocaine in ‘Friendly Rides’ van, Lee County deputies say
SANFORD, N.C. (WNCN) — A taxi driver is facing drug charges after he was found with cocaine in his work vehicle, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said Friday. Man charged in shooting gets habitual felon indictment
A man charged with shooting at a CSX railroad worker on July 4 has been indicted for being a habitual felon. Ryan Charles Brown, 49, of Sanford was originally indicted Aug. 14 for discharging a weapon into a vehicle while it was occupied by William Scott Johnson on the railroad tracks at Ammons Farm and Rod Sullivan roads.
Lady Jackets start slow, then rout First Flight
This year, it was First Flight that had to make the long bus ride. It will be Lee County that rides into the second round. The Lady Jackets have, purely by coincidence, been paired up with the Nighthawks in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A state playoffs in each of the past two seasons. Last year, it was First Flight that had the higher seed, and Lee had to make a 243-mile trip to Kill Devil Hills, only for the Nighthawks to end their season.
