    Cullman County Commission moves toward airport expansion

    CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Commission at its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, May 21, approved plans for engineering services for the reconstruction of the apron and hangars to be constructed on a new taxiway at Cullman Regional Airport.

    Airport Director Ben Harrison said to the commission, “What we’re asking you for is the engineering services and design on this project,” Said Harrison, “The reason we’re trying to do this right now is we don’t want to start digging in late September or late October. We are afraid that three-four month project would turn into a six-seven month project.”

    The commission approved “Resolution 2024-23: Approved Engineering Services Contract, pending any requested changes by ALDOT, for General Aviation Apron Reconstruction Design Project at the Cullman Regional Airport.”

    Cullman Regional Airport is a joint venture between Cullman County and the City of Cullman. The Cullman City Council approved its similar resolutions earlier this month .

    In other business, the commission:

    • Recognized Cullman County Parks and Recreation Director Doug Davenport, as well as the retirement of his wife, Sharon Davenport from the Sales Tax Department
    • Ratified the City of Cullman Tax Abatement for Project Canton in the amount of $573,300
    • Proclamation: 2024 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
    • Resolution 2024-22: Change speed limit to 25 mph on County Road 1421
    • Approved payment to Thompson Rental for equipment repair in the amount of $24,264.88
    • Resolution 2024-24: Approved Engineering Services Contract, pending any requested changes by ALDOT, for Midfield Development Design Project at the Cullman Regional Airport
    • Ratified the final settlement of insolvents, errors, and taxes in litigationforFY2023 for the Cullman County Revenue Service and authorize Chairman to sign
    • Approved the purchase of two (2) Ford Maverick Super Crew off State Bid from Stivers in the amount of $24,352 each for Revenue Department
    • Road Department to be auctioned on GovDeals or by any means necessary
    • Approved the surplus of a 1997 Ford F-350 (Vin # 1FDLF47F4VEA51925) from Sanitation to be auctioned on GovDeals or by any means necessary
    • Approved the surplus of a 2000 Chevrolet Venture Van (VIN# 1GNDU03E4YD107173) from IT to be auctioned on GovDeals or by any means necessary
    • Approved the surplus of the following vehicles from the Sheriff’s Office to be auctioned on GovDeals or by any means necessary
      • 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV
      • 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV
      • 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV
    • Extended Bid # 1434: for Metal Pipe to Twins Oaks Environmental
    • Awarded Bid # 1463: for one (1) Self Propelled Power Broom to Cowin Equipment Company, Inc and authorize the purchase for$33,184 from Road funds and authorize Chairman to sign
    • Awarded Bid # 1464: for two (2) Manufactured Park Model Cabins to Alabama Park Models, LC and authorize the purchase for $54,075 each from Tourism Funds and authorize Chairman to sign
    • Approved proposed plat The Reserve Phase 2 at Stonebridge. A minor subdivision containing 3 Lots in Commission District 3. Subdivision is located half a mile South of the Bolte Road on County Road 706 and the corner of County Road 717

    The commission approved a request from County Attorney Emily Johnston for executive session under Section 7 (a)(6) of Act No. 2005-40 regarding a real estate transaction.

    The next Cullman County Commission work session will be Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at 4 p.m. with the meeting following at 6.
