CULLMAN, Ala. – The Crossing, a local nonprofit dedicated to providing food and other services to those in need in Cullman, is excited to host its first-ever bass tournament on June 8 at Smith Lake Park. Anglers from the community and beyond are invited to participate. Check-in will begin at 5 a.m. with final weigh-ins scheduled for 3 p.m.

The tournament features two-person teams, a five-bass limit and a $10 entry for the biggest fish pot. Entry fees are $100 per team, with substantial prizes for the top four teams: $1,500 for first place, $750 for second place, $500 for third place and $350 for fourth place. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit The Crossing’s food bank ministry, which provides essential food assistance to those in need in the community.

Founder and director of The Crossing, Melissa Hudson, shared the inspiration behind the event: “Matthew 4:19 says ‘And he saith unto them, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ The Crossing was created to feed His sheep. We provide food for the body and food for the soul. The funds from this fishing tournament will allow us to continue doing what we were called to do… ‘feed His sheep.’”

Participants can expect a straightforward tournament format. Each team will weigh in their five largest fish, with the total weight determining the winners. Additionally, those entering the biggest fish pot will compete for an extra cash prize.

The funds raised from the tournament are vital for The Crossing, especially as food costs continue to rise.

“The money raised from this tournament will assist The Crossing in purchasing much-needed food for our participants. The cost of food has increased dramatically, and it is hurting those in our community that have limited income. Some of our participants have stated that they have to decide whether to pay bills, buy medicine or buy food. At The Crossing we hope to be able to lift some of that burden,” Hudson shared.
