Durham's latest hot spot delivers fiery spice and punchy citrus from a top chef
If things had gone according to chef Michael Lee’s original plans, Durham might not have one of its flagship restaurants — M Sushi. More than a decade ago when Lee was looking to open his first restaurant, he thought it would be M Nikkei, a fusion restaurant blending Japanese techniques and dishes with the spice and citrus of Peruvian ingredients. There was nothing else like it at the time in Durham, nor since. Lee instead opened M Sushi, the most ambitious sushi restaurant in the city and now the cornerstone of Lee’s restaurant empire. But he wasn’t done with Nikkei cuisine. And now after 10 years and seven other restaurants, Lee has finally returned to his original vision. M Nikkei opened Halloween weekend in Durham’s Five Points district in the very heart of downtown. If you’re like a lot of people, you may have brought home one, two, maybe even three, pumpkins as soon as there was a little chill in the air. From big carving pumpkins to Hooligans and Jack-Be-Littles, pumpkins always seem to help set the mood for fall. But once Halloween passes, think twice before tossing that pumpkin or gourd in the trash. When you throw a pumpkin away, it typically goes to a landfill, where it breaks down with little oxygen and can produce methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming and climate change. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that over 1 billion pounds of pumpkins end up in landfills each year. The good news: There are other options. Composting your pumpkins (and food waste) means less methane and more landfill space, allowing us to recycle the nutrients into valuable fertilizer and mulch. Waymo told a Raleigh transportation audience last week that it is in active talks with Triangle governments about bringing its autonomous taxi service to the area.
