Waymo eyes Raleigh, Durham for self-driving taxis after Charlotte. What to know
Waymo told a Raleigh transportation audience last week that it is in active talks with Triangle governments about bringing its autonomous taxi service to the area. The company plans to launch first in Charlotte, likely by late next year. FULL STORY: Will Waymo come to the Triangle? What a company rep said in Raleigh this week Here are key takeaways: Rich Harrington, a policy adviser for Waymo, told attendees at the N.C. Department of Transportation’s annual Transportation Summit that the company is in “active conversations” with local governments in Raleigh and the Research Triangle. He did not name which ones or give a timetable. Charlotte comes first. Waymo has finished digitally mapping streets in Charlotte and is testing cars there with human drivers behind the wheel, Harrington said, with service expected to start in and around the uptown core by late next year. Safety is central to Waymo’s pitch. Harrington said the company has logged 270 million fully autonomous miles and claims a 92% reduction in serious crashes compared with human drivers in the same cities. State law is already in place. The General Assembly passed a bill in 2017 permitting fully autonomous vehicles and barring local governments from adding

New lights brighten a stretch of an otherwise dark Interstate 440 in Raleigh
Driving on Interstate 440 around Raleigh at night can be a little disorienting. The highway is six or eight lanes wide, often filled with traffic you’d expect in the state’s second-largest city, but for most of its length, I-440 is as dark as any country road. That has changed along a four-mile stretch of the highway on the west side of town, where lights now shine down on the pavement between Lake Boone Trail and Cary. When the N.C. Department of Transportation widened this section of the Beltline , it installed lights on poles in the median and on tall masts at the interchanges. This bright stretch of I-440 will likely remain an anomaly for a while. NCDOT tends to install lights only as part of a major construction project, and only one of those is planned along the Beltline in the foreseeable future, at Wake Forest Road starting in late 2029 . The newly illuminated section of the Beltline reflects NCDOT’s changing approach to highway lights, said Greg Hall, who leads the lighting and electrical design team. Years ago, it was up to local engineers to determine when and where to install lights, Hall said, and when what is

The South’s Rail Revival: Faster Trains Take Shape as Gulf Coast Ridership Beats Forecasts
A faster train ride between Raleigh and Richmond moved closer this month with a $550 million federal commitment. Farther south, passengers are already providing a test of what a restored rail connection can do: Amtrak’s New Orleans–Mobile service approached 150,000 trips around its first anniversary, nearly twice its initial forecast.
