NORWICH, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Around 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, the Norwich Police Department received a call about someone stealing from inside parked vehicles in the Norwich High School parking lot.

The man who had been allegedly stealing from the vehicles, 28-year-old Matthew Maricle of Cincinnatus, was then pursued by police for 30 miles into Otsego County. The chase ended in Mt. Upton when Maricle ran his vehicle into a ditch, Norwich police said.

Police then discovered that the vehicle Maricle was driving had been carjacked from an 81-year-old man in the City of Cortland earlier in the day.

“Mr. Maricle was released from jail May 1, and within three days of being released, he carjacks an 81-year-old man, and then takes my officers on a dangerous vehicle pursuit into two counties. I am thankful no one was hurt,” said Norwich Police Chief Rueben Roach.

Maricle will be held pending arraignment at Norwich City Court.
