Malibu Speed Camera Tests Could inform Coachella Valley Use
Could speed cameras be coming to the Coachella Valley? After a test in Malibu recorded about 100,000 potential speeding violations in just nine days, contributors on The Roggin Report discussed whether automated traffic enforcement could help make local roads safer. The cameras were installed at four locations along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. During the nine-day testing period, they recorded more than 11,000 speeding violations per day on average. The violations did not result in tickets because the cameras were still being tested. Once enforcement begins, fines could range from $50 to $500.The numbers sparked a conversation about whether similar cameras could make a difference on busy roads throughout the desert.During the discussion, contributors considered several locations where speeding and pedestrian safety are concerns, including Indian Canyon Drive and Gene Autry Trail in Palm Springs, Highway 111, Fred Waring Drive, Washington Street, Country Club Drive and Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage, Monterey Avenue in Palm Desert, and Palm Drive in Desert Hot Springs.Brad Ward said he supports speed cameras in part because he regularly walks around downtown Palm Springs.“Walking across Indian Canyon at some of the crosswalks is absolutely treacherous,” Ward said.Paul Scott also voiced support for the technology, pointing
