    Local Law Enforcement attends National Law Enforcement Memorial in D.C.

    Crisp County Sheriff’s Office and the Cordele Police Department had the opportunity this past week during National Police Week to attend the National Law Enforcement Memorial Service put on by the  National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund in Washington D.C. The consisted of many events including the Police Unity Tour Ride-In, 36th Annual Candlelight Vigil, Stand Watch for the Fallen, and the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service.

    The Police Unity Tour Ride-In occurred on Sunday May 12, 2024, this event had hundreds of law enforcement, volunteers and supporters riding bikes as they arrive to the memorial.

    The 36th Annual Candlelight Vigil occurred on Monday May 13, 2024 by the National Law Enforcement Memorial. Thousands in attendance including law enforcement, survivors, family, friends, and supporters. This event included special guest speakers from the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, Homeland Security, and more. “Each year, the names of officers killed in the line of duty are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. These names are then read aloud during the annual Candlelight Vigil to memorialize those who made the ultimate sacrifice. In 2024, 282 officers will be honored during the 36th Annual Candlelight Vigil, on Saturday, May 13th on the National Mall (between 4th and 7th Streets and Madison and Jefferson Drives) in Washington, DC.” Included in this years memorial was our local heroes that lost their lives protecting our community, Deputy Tyee Michael Browne of the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Robert Rodgers of Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office. Their names will forever be remembered and engraved on the memorial in Washington D.C..

    The Stand Watch for the Fallen occurred on Wednesday May 15, 2024. This event Honor Guards stand watch for 10-minute intervals to honor and remember the law enforcement officers that made the ultimate sacrifice. This goes on for a 12 hour period from 12pm to 12am.

    Wednesday May 15, 2024 was National Peace Officers’ Day. President Joe Biden gave a speech at the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service.
