Hometown History looks at the impact the railroad had on Chillicothe
CHILLICOTHE— The introduction of the railroad changed the game for those shipping out goods and traveling to new places. This is especially true in Chillicothe. To remember the railroad and the important role it played in the development of Ross County Historical Society has a working train model on display that delights visitors of all ages. Before the railway came to town, farmers and merchants relied on the canal. Trains, however, were quicker and more reliable. The railroad first came to Chillicothe in the 1800s, but it made such an impact they remained popular throughout the Camp Sherman days. Today, trains are still used to transport goods in the community, but as train companies have closed, they are no longer a reliable way for people to travel. Still, many people are fascinated by the railroad. Those at the historical society say they often hear stories from those who rode trains locally or had family members who worked on them. The diorama at the historical society helps take people back to the 1930s and shows how trains ran throughout the eastern part of town. Depots, houses and businesses can be seen on the miniature streets. Much has changed in the area
