West M escapes JG; ZHS rolls, Toliver has 6 TDs, Week 6 roundup
NEW CONCORD — John Glenn had more momentum than a bullet train in the fourth quarter, as its comeback bid against visiting West Muskingum reached a crescendo in the closing seconds of their Muskingum Valley League crossover battle on Sept. 25. But after scoring twice in the final frame to get within a point, Drew Dollings and Cooper McKenzie snuffed out Jase Ritchey's two-point conversion run with 33 seconds left to preserve the Tornadoes' thrilling 28-27 win. West (5-1) led 28-14 after Grady Dollings' 43-yard touchdown catch in the third, but John Glenn (3-3) rallied as junior Jensen Parry scoring on an 8-yard TD run and the freshman Ritchey adding a 2-yard plunge. Muskies coach Matt Edwards elected to go for the likely win after Ritchey scored on a keeper over right guard. He went to Ritchey again on the two-pointer, this time to the left side. Dollings came up from his cornerback spot to slow him, and McKenzie, a defensive end, beat his block to make the tackle two yards short of the goal-line. The ensuing onside kick was unsuccessful as West, which got 245 yards passing and 3 TDs from Noah Morrison, escaped with its fifth straight win.

Huntington QB Frankie Hirsch sticks out from the rest | Webb
CHILLICOTHE — Over the past 14 years, I’ve covered thousands of high school athletes. I’ve witnessed plenty of buzzer-beating game-winners, record-breaking performances and program-changing victories in that time, and I’ve been lucky enough to cover some of the area’s most notable four-year careers. There are some who stand out, others that would assuredly jog my memory, and plenty more I could rave about if I had hours upon hours to do so. But some stick out like a sore thumb. That’s not because they were simply memorable, but because that’s just how good the athlete was. Frankie Hirsch is that good of an athlete. Huntington’s senior quarterback has been impressive throughout his career. With his level-headed approach to each obstacle, alongside his uncanny ability to make a big play when his team needs it the most, he’s honored those who have come before him while setting an example for generations to come. His career moment to this point was an 18-yard touchdown run with 57 seconds left in a 27-22 win over Zane Trace on Sept. 11. That run came on fourth-and-5 and handed the Huntsmen their first win over the Pioneers since 2007. As a junior, he was the

Study links life purpose to lower suicide risk in college students
A new study co-authored by Muskingum University President Flavius Lilly found that college students who reported a stronger sense of purpose and meaning in life were less likely to experience suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The study also found that purpose and meaning remained strongly associated with lower suicide risk even after accounting for depression, anxiety, eating disorders and other demographic and social factors. “One of the most encouraging findings from this research is that purpose and meaning in life
