The Groesbeck baseball team split a pair of games last week in preparation for the postseason playoffs.The Goats were scheduled to play Rockdale on Wednesday, May 1, in Madisonville. Game two in the best-of-three bi-district series is slated for today in Madisonville. Should a third game be necessary, it is scheduled for Friday, May 3, at Rosebud-Lott.Groesbeck finished in third place in District 20-3A with an 8-6 record. In their first playoff action in five years, the Mexia Blackcats fell behind early and dropped a 4-1 decision to Troy in the first game of a best-of-three, bi-district series at Waco ISD Sports Complex on Thursday night, May 2.Troy scored three runs in the first inning and one in the second and coasted to the victory.Mexia scored its run in the top of the seventh inning. Two doubles teams, two singles players qualify for net regional
Six Groesbeck tennis players qualified for the regional tournament by finishing first or second at the District 20-3A tournament at Franklin last week.The Goats had three individual champions at the district tourney.Johnae King and Kadyn King teamed up to win the mixed doubles championship. They defeated teammates Braedon Bondhus and Peyton deCordova in the title match. Both teams will head to the regional tournament.In singles action, Tripp Burleson won the boy's championship and will compete at the regional meet.On the girl's side, Rylee Milstead was the singles runner-up and also qualified for the regional.The regional tournament will be May 10-11 at A&M Consolidated High School in College Station.In addition to the regional qualifiers, Groesbeck had a number of other players who were place winners at the district tournament.Antonio Scarpati finished third in boys singles. Shane Sexton was fourth in girls singles.Brandon Gonzalez and Jake Ash finished third in boy's doubles. Shayli Aparicio and Klaire Kelley were fourth in girl's doubles.
Lady Goats swept in bi-district playoff series
The Groesbeck softball team's season came to an end in the bi-district round of the playoffs last week.The Lady Goats were swept by Troy in a best-of-three series. Troy won 15-0 in Rosebud-Lott on Friday, April 26, and took a 21-4 decision in Riesel on Saturday, April 27. Both games were stopped after three innings due to the 15-run mercy rule.In the second game Saturday, Groesbeck took the early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. But Troy stormed back with 16 runs in the top of the second and added five in the top of the third frame.Janae Trojacek and Kamryn Curry belted two-run homers in the first inning to account for Groesbeck's runs. Landrie Pringle walked and scored ahead of Trojacek. Brittyn Bradley walked and scored ahead of Pringle.Sa'Riyah Smith also had a double for the Lady Goats, who finished their season with a 16-13-1 record.Troy had 15 hits off two Groesbeck pitchers and took advantage of 11 walks.In Friday's opening game, Groesbeck was held hitless through three innings.Troy had eight hits and took advantage of eight walks and three Lady Goat errors.
