One year since Spartan Ventures launch, here is where it stands

Saturday will mark one year since Michigan State University's Board of Trustees approved the creation of Spartan Ventures. The non-profit entity was founded as a "groundbreaking" name, image and likeness fundraising arm with a $100 million gift from longtime MSU donors Greg and Dawn Williams to jumpstart its bank account.Since then, new leaders have taken the helm following the loss of its CEO and the Athletic Director. From its inception, transparency has been a concern. Trustees were asked to sign non-disclosure agreements to view documents related to the entity, which some trustees have penned op-eds disputing. In an October interview with The State News, MSU Athletic Director Dan Bartholomae said transparency was a top challenge for Spartan Ventures. He also said to expect "a pretty loud statement" defining Spartan Ventures in early 2027 - over a year after the entity's initiation. Here is a breakdown of where Spartan Ventures stands today: Prior to the implementation of Spartan Ventures, all of the "revenue generating units" were housed under MSU Athletics, according to MSU Athletics Spokesperson Matt Larson. Now, units like the marketing and fan engagement teams are kept under the Spartan Ventures "umbrella." These sectors still serve as the marketing provider

Appeals panel reinstates lawsuit stemming from Holt school bus crash

LANSING — An appeals panel has reinstated a lawsuit contending a Holt Public Schools bus driver was negligent in a crash that seriously injured a 7-year-old boy in 2023. In an Oct. 23 ruling, the state Court of Appeals reversed an Ingham County Circuit Court ruling dismissing the case. The crash happened in October 2023 at the intersection of Harding Avenue and Schippell Street, police said at the time. School officials said the crash involved the Elliott Elementary School Route No. 5 bus. The boy was riding a bike westbound on the sidewalk along Harding when he went into the road and crashed into the side of the bus as the driver was turning south onto Schippell from westbound Harding, officials said. The boy was run over by the rear tires of the bus and suffered serious injuries, they said. The substitute bus driver had dropped off the boy at his assigned stop, and he followed the bus along its route on his bicycle, the three-judge appeals panel said in its ruling. "At one point when the bus was stopped, (the boy) got off his bicycle and approached the driver's side of the bus," the judges said. "He jumped up

Fowlerville is seeing declining enrollment, but also boosted academics

According to preliminary numbers, Fowlerville Community Schools marked a loss of 101.46 full-time equivalent students between October 2025 and 2026. The number, which accounts for roughly 4.5% of the student body, could improve as data is reviewed and finalized for Count Day — but there's more upswing than down at FCS, according to Superintendent Matt Stuard. A significant chunk of the enrollment decline can be attributed to smaller incoming kindergarten classes replacing larger graduating senior classes, Stuard told The Daily. Meanwhile, the district is focused on better understanding why families choose to stay or leave as their children get older. “Our priority is to provide strong instruction, safe schools and meaningful opportunities that prepare students for success in school and beyond,” he said. “We’ve made significant progress in these areas over the past several years.” In the spring, the district's students achieved their strongest combined reading and mathematics performance for grades 3-7 in the eleven-year history of the M-STEP, according to Stuard. When averaging student performance in mathematics and ELA, he added, local students outperformed the state at every grade level. More: How often are students missing school in Livingston? The panel was part of the Spartan Bus Tour, a twice a year tour of Michigan that Guskiewicz began when he became Michigan State's president about two and a half years ago. More: Michigan university leaders fight research cuts as feds shift priorities More: Don't dismantle America's higher ed advantage over other nations, MSU president says The speakers agreed that one way to beat historically high levels of distrust in higher education and a federal government that has cut billions of dollars in research funding from universities nationwide during the last two years is to partner together to remind the nation how universities have been driving forces of innovation through research done on campus.
