A Franklin County jury acquitted a 30-year-old woman after determining she shot another woman in self-defense.

Ja'Lynn Davis, of Franklinton, was on trial for two counts of felonious assault in the Jan. 7, 2023 incident.

The shooting happened after another woman went to a home on the 400 block of West State Street, where Davis and a male friend were. The woman was looking for the male, with whom she shared a child with, and tried to force her way into the home, according to testimony at Davis' trial.

Joe Landusky, Davis' attorney, said the woman and Davis got into a physical fight that resulted in more than a dozen braids being ripped from Davis' hair.

During the fight, Davis got a handgun and fired at the woman, striking her in the head and the leg. The bullet that struck the woman in the head did not penetrate her skull and she survived her injuries.

Prosecutors had argued Davis had shot the woman because she was upset over the mutually known male friend.

Davis argued at trial that the shooting was in self-defense, which the jury agreed with. The jury deliberated for about two hours over two days before reaching its verdict.
