Columbus police released additional information Thursday and are seeking help from the public in the investigation into the Sunday night shooting death of a 13-year-old boy in the city's Linden area.

Police posted a photo of a silver or white SUV they believe is a 2008-2012 Ford Escape related to the death of Angel Salguero Diaz, 13, whom documents released Thursday by police show was found fatally shot just after 10:15 p.m. Sunday night in an alley behind homes on the 1300 block of East Hudson Street, just off Medina Avenue. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene at 10:24 p.m., police said.

The occupants of the vehicle may be witnesses to the boy’s death, the police division said on Facebook and X (formerly known as Twitter). Residents who live in that area are asked to check their security camera footage between 8:15 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. Sunday to see if they captured any footage that might be related to the shooting.

A used shell casing was recovered in the front lawn of a house facing East Hudson near Medina, according to police records released Thursday, and responding officers made contact with a witness.

Police told the Dispatch on Wednesday that a recording of a 911 could not be released because it was not recorded due to a technical error, but released it Thursday morning after a reporter asked the city's public safety department for details about the technical problem.

In the recording, a woman tells a dispatcher that she believes she has found a dead body in the alleyway, but has not left her vehicle to check if the person is alive. The caller says, "We can't tell why he's dead, though," and when the dispatcher asks whether the body is wrapped up, she says, "He's just laying in the alleyway, he's not moving."

The dispatcher tells the caller police are on the way, and the call ends.

A Columbus police detective investigating the shooting said Wednesday that the department did not have any suspects and was reviewing what video footage it did collect to determine the events leading up to the killing.

Police initially reported that Diaz was 12 years old but later said a miscommunication with his family about his date of birth caused the error. Diaz, who is 13, attended Columbus City Schools' Medina Middle School.

A spokesperson for Columbus City Schools said staff and students at Medina Middle School are receiving resources from the district's care team to cope with the tragedy and encouraged parents to speak with their students.

Diaz's mother declined Thursday to speak with a Dispatch reporter.
