Columbus police officer injured in German Village collision

COLUMBUS ( WCMH ) – A Columbus police officer was hospitalized after a two-car crash south of Downtown early Tuesday morning.

According to Sergeant Joe Albert, a Blue Hyundai Sonata was traveling eastbound on South 3rd Street approaching East Columbus Street in German Village at 12:45 a.m. At the same time a marked Columbus Police cruiser was heading westbound towards the South 3rd Street intersection.

One dead, driver runs from northeast Columbus crash

The cruiser was actively responding to an emergency call and had its red and blue emergency lights and siren activated. The Sonata reportedly did not yield the right of way to the cruiser and collided with it in the intersection.

The driver of the Sonata, who was cited for failing to yield, was treated at the scene by medics, while the officer in the cruiser was taken to Grant Medical Center in stable condition. The officer has since been released from the hospital.

The officer was taken to Grant Medical Center in stable condition. No injury information was provided for the other driver or what led up to the crash.
