Evergreen’s Chamberlin breaks Ohio career home run record
METAMORA, Ohio — In the final game of her superb four-year softball career at Evergreen High School, Vikings senior catcher Macy Chamberlin tied and then broke Ohio's all-time record for home runs on Thursday, hitting her 60th and 61st career homers in her team's 6-2 victory over visiting Port Clinton. “I couldn't have done it without my team,” Chamberlin said. “They have supported me throughout this whole year, through ups and downs, and through the pressure. Without this team, it wouldn't have been possible. “The only pressure I got was the pressure I gave myself. After games here and there, I would give myself pressure, but would come back the next day relaxed and ready to go.” Chamberlin, who was named first team All-Ohio the past two seasons, equaled the mark set by Hope Straight of Mount Vernon High School (from 2016-19) with a solo blast to right-center in the first inning against off of Redskins pitcher Ashton Sanchez.

High school notebook: McCoy takes Maumee Valley post
Former Northview and Bowling Green State University basketball player Niki McCoy has been hired as the next girls basketball coach at Maumee Valley Country Day School. McCoy's first task is to restore the Hawks' varsity program which, along with fellow Toledo Area Athletic Conference member Emmanuel Christian, was unable to field a varsity squad for the 2023-24 season. “I am excited for the opportunity to build a program that prioritizes player mental health, and a winning mindset while setting and holding high expectations,” McCoy said in a media announcement released by the school. “I believe Maumee Valley is a perfect place to set a standard of success at the very beginning of this rebuilding process, both on and off the court.” While playing for Ohio hall-of-fame coach Jerry Sigler at Northview, McCoy helped the Wildcats reach back-to-back Division I state semifinal appearances in 2004 and 2005. She moved on to play in the Mid-American Conference at Akron University for two seasons before transferring to BGSU to finish her career.

Anthony Wayne softball pulls away from Perrysburg to claim NLL Buckeye Division title
The floodgates opened for Anthony Wayne’s softball team in the top of the seventh inning, and the Generals reeled in a league title as a result. Anthony Wayne erupted for 10 runs in the final frame to turn a back-and-forth state-ranked showdown with Perrysburg into a convincing 15-5 victory in a Northern Lakes League contest on Wednesday at Perrysburg High School. With the victory, the Generals clinched the outright NLL Buckeye Division championship with two league games remaining. “To be able to come back from being behind and put up 10 on the eighth-ranked team in the state, that’s a statement coming back and putting that kind of offense on,” Anthony Wayne coach Ron Myers said. “Earlier in the day, we probably played some of the worst defense that we have all season. The players really came back though in that seventh inning and just were going after things at that point in time.”

Former Division II men's basketball standout Johnson bringing 'unique' offensive talents to BGSU
BOWLING GREEN — A quick look at recent Bowling Green State University men’s basketball transfer Marcus Johnson, and one would assume that he spends most of his time near the basket. Don’t be fooled. There’s a lot more to his game than what the 6-foot-7 forward’s physical appearance might present. “This is my 16th year of college coaching, I’ve never seen a player like him,” Wheeling men’s basketball coach Chris Richardson said of his former player. “ … I think all coaches want to play through the strengths of their players, especially on the offensive end, and we were fortunate with Marcus that those strengths were pretty unique for a player of his size.” Johnson, whose offensive abilities resemble more of a small guard than someone with his physique, will bring his talents from the NCAA Division II school to northwest Ohio. The Akron native, who won a pair of OHSAA state championships with St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, was one of the best shooters and scorers at the Division II level a year ago.

At 3:35 p.m., representatives from more than three dozen schools, including Indiana, Cincinnati, and nearly the entire Mid-American Conference stood nearfield at AW’s Schaller Memorial Stadium to watch Kinnee go through passing drills. “I felt like I threw pretty good,” Kinnee said. “There were a few balls that came off my hand a little eh, but I thought...

BGSU (29-18, 21-6 MAC) started a remarkable 17-0 in league play this season. If not for alumni-backed fundraising efforts to bring the program back, the Falcons wouldn’t be celebrating their current success on the field. Here is a timeline of how things played out for the program since 2020.
