Johnson County's newest bakery, coffee shop offers international flavors

Abeer Jari is on the balls of her feet this early Monday afternoon, scurrying between the kitchen and the front register. She works through a line of three customers, one of whom said they decided to stop by after seeing a post on Instagram. She plops a meat-filled farmoza pastry on a plate and ships off a date bar. There aren’t many baked goods left at this point. Her inventory doesn’t make it until the end of the day. “So far, everything has sold out, and I’m happy for it,” she explained. Her new shop, Levant Bakery & Cafe, serves Middle Eastern cuisine from the Levant region, as well as items from beyond. It opened quietly over a week ago at 6518 Martway St. in Mission, but it plans a more official launch this weekend. Its walls are covered in antique frames and dark green paint. A large window is framed by checkered curtains, and a wall of mirrors covers one side of the bakery. The style is — some might say — grandma-chic. For Jari, the shop is a bit of a passion project. “I’ve always loved to bake,” Jari said. “Now I’m coming back to my dream.” She’s

Eating At Rozzelle Court Feels Like Lunching In An Italian Courtyard In Kansas City

Kansas City has plenty of lunch spots, but very few of them come with stone columns, a fountain in the middle of the room, and a glass roof overhead. One of them sits inside a famous art museum, and it looks more like a courtyard in Italy than a place to grab a sandwich.

12 Bathroom Habits in Kansas That Could Make Other Americans Uncomfortable

A Kansas trip can involve a city pool, a university recreation facility, a lakeside cabin, and a campground with a much simpler bathroom. The routines that work in one setting may be awkward in another. A shared towel service, a short shower, or an outdoor toilet walk can all require a moment of adjustment.

This popular chicken chain opens soon in a Kansas City suburb

A massively popular Southern chicken chain is opening its doors in Raytown this week , taking over the space of a shuttered Applebee’s and bringing around 120 jobs to the area, according to a press release. Chick-fil-A opens at 6:30 a.m. Thursday at 9330 E. 350 Highway. Raytown’s first-ever Chick-fil-A will host a “moove-in” party on day one, offering guests who show up in cow-spotted clothing or accessories a free entrée or kid’s meal. The Star initially reported on the new Chick-fil-A location in May, when a spokesperson told the publication that they were eyeing a fall opening date. What was built in a demolished Applebee’s place is the 20th Chick-fil-A location in the Kansas City area, complete with seating for 90 guests, a dual drive-thru with a dedicated lane for mobile orders and an indoor playground. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chick-fil-A Raytown (@chickfila_raytown) The Raytown location of the Atlanta-based chain is owned and operated by Andrew Hartley, a press release said. His experience with Chick-fil-A dates back to 2010, when he was in college in Illinois and started working at a location there. He has lived in the Kansas City area for multiple years.

Popular Mediterranean restaurant looks to open two more Johnson County spots

A favorite Mediterranean chain is officially adding another location in Johnson County — and is working through details on yet another. Meddys , a chain born in Wichita, is looking to open a location in Olathe at 17943 W. 119th St. Additionally, owner Alex Harb told The Star he’s in the process of landing a spot in south Overland Park development Bluhawk, which is off 159th Street and Highway 69. The specifics on that location are less concrete. The ink is dry on the Olathe location, however, and it aims to open in February or March. Harb said it’ll be comparable to the Prairie Village location (4105 W. 83rd St.) in size. All Meddys restaurants follow the same general aesthetic and offer typical menu favorites, like falafel, shawarma, succulent chicken and a hummus plate. “We’re very grateful for all the love we’ve had from the Kansas City market,” Harb said. “We like neighborhood-y locations.” His newest spot will overtake an undeveloped plot of land and neighbor The Bar Ridgeview : the newest installment for The Bar that will feature a mini golf course. Meddys has six other locations across the metro and is expanding in other states. It has two

Johnson County's newest Yemeni café opens, with a vibe ‘like no other'

It was a quiet, dreary afternoon in Mission, where rustling leaves were the most prominent noise. Inside Moka & Co. , however, just a few open tables remain. The chorus of a few dozen voices filled the café. Ahmad Aly, owner of the franchise location, stood at the register Monday afternoon and battled the crowd by taking orders. “It’s been good. It’s been really busy, honestly,” he said of the first few days. “But can’t complain.” His Yemeni coffee shop opened over the weekend at 5922 Barkley St. in the heart of Mission, marking the first KC-area location for the franchise. It bears some similarities to the other Yemeni coffee shops — primarily in its flavors and drinks — but like each of the other shops, it has its own style. One notable difference is its drive-thru. All the other Yemeni and Arabic cafés in the metro require someone to walk in to grab their drink. It has some traditional decor, but the space feels intentionally modern, with white granite and light-wood accents. At Moka & Co., a New York-based coffee chain, both traditional Yemeni drinks and Americanized versions are available. For example, customers can order mufawar ($5 for a
