Alma Nurses Plan Strike Later This Month
Nurses at MyMichigan Medical Center Alma have given 10 days’ notice prior to a planned strike on September 21st. According to the Michigan Nurses Association, the three-day strike is over unfair labor practices, and follows a similar strike in July. Since then, two more unfair labor practice charges have been filed with the National Labor Relations Board, bringing the total against the hospital to eight. Nurses claim the hospital withdrew bargaining proposals after nurses gave strike notice, changed shift trading and psychiatric nurse assignment policies without bargaining, refused to allow paid time off to accrue on weekend overtime, discussed unmade proposals directly with staff, withheld holiday benefits from eligible nurses and mandated on call time for an OB nurse in violation of the contract. Nurses voted to strike after rejecting the most recent offer from the hospital, following a September 1st bargaining session.
