CLEVELAND (WJW) — The suspect shot and killed in an attempted carjacking of an Amazon delivery driver’s vehicle was a 17-year-old boy, according to authorities.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the boy as 17-year-old Alquin Wells. His death has been ruled a homicide, caused by gunshot wounds to his back which caused several internal injuries.
It was one of five violent robberies Cleveland police believe were committed all within an hour-and-a-half, all by the same group of suspects, who have been identified and are all ages 12 to 17 years old, according to a Wednesday news release.
Just before 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, a driver reported being carjacked at gunpoint in the 1300 block of Old River Road.
The suspects fled in that car to an area near West 88th Street and Denison Avenue and robbed a man at gunpoint, stealing his iPad, according to police.
The suspects were then reported in the same vehicle at about 3 p.m. near the intersection of West 73rd Street and Colgate Avenue, where they allegedly robbed a man of his iPhone.
They then drove to the intersection of West 130th Street and Brookpark Road, where they carjacked another vehicle at gunpoint, according to the release.
The suspects arrived in the two stolen vehicles near the intersection of West 48th Street and Franklin Boulevard, where the deadly shooting happened just after 4 p.m., according to police.
The suspects carjacked the deliver driver’s vehicle. Wells drove away as “several shots” were fired, which ultimately killed the teen, according to police. The car soon crashed.
Wells was found on the ground on West 48th Street, south of the intersection, according to the medical examiner’s office. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS workers.
A West 48th Street resident shared photos of her car, which she said was struck by gunfire.
An Amazon representative in a Saturday statement wrote, “We are saddened to learn of this tragic incident and are working closely with law enforcement as they investigate.”
Two boys ages 12 and 17 are now facing charges in Cuyahoga County juvenile court including aggravated robbery and grand theft of a motor vehicle in relation to the Old River Road robbery and others that day, the I-Team reported. The boys are also accused of stealing camera equipment from an elderly victim.
Two other 17-year-olds are also facing aggravated robbery and attempted grand theft charges for an incident that allegedly happened Sunday along West 105th Street, the I-Team reported.
One adult, Zoilo Jose Munoz-Olmo, is facing a receiving stolen property charge in Cleveland Municipal Court, the I-Team reported.
Munoz-Olmo and the four boys were arrested Sunday afternoon along West 53rd Street, the I-Team reported.
