The devastating news of Albini's death also comes just a week before his rock band Shellac was set to release To All Trains, which would've marked their first album release in over a decade. Albini was the guitar and vocals in the post-hardcore rock band where he played alongside musicians Bob Weston and Todd Trainer.

After the heartbreaking news was announced, fans of Albini took to X, formerly Twitter, sharing their heartache over the unexpected loss. One fan wrote: "Seriously gutted to hear about the passing of Steve Albini. A genius engineer, producer and musician." And another added: "Shocking news. Steve Albini was responsible for shaping the majority of the music I love. His approach to sound aesthetics influenced my life tremendously. RIP." And a third wrote: "God, this is horrible news. Outside of his work with Nirvana and Pixie, Albini also worked with famous acts such as Bush, Melt Banana, the Breeders, Jarvis Cocker, PJ Harvey, the Jesus Lizard, Godspeed You! Outside of his artistic talent, Albini was also an outspoken advocate for musicians and would often voice his opposition to artists being financially exploited and would refuse to take royalties from many bands and artists. In an interview with Spin , Albini spoke out about his involvement with Nirvana and his refusal to take "points" or a percentage of the rock band's album profits. He said: "I would like to be paid like a plumber….The record company will expect me to ask for a point or a point and a half. If we assume three million sales, that works out to 400,000 dollars or so. There’s no f-----g way I would ever take that much money. I wouldn’t be able to sleep.”
