CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Thousands will head to McCormick Place this week to check out the latest in robotics and automation at North America’s largest trade show: Automate 2024.

The annual show has brought more than 800 exhibitors to the convention center’s South Hall. Among them: Doosan Robotics, which was showing off Moodie the robot barista.

Doosan CEO Willian Ryu said Moodie analyzes a customer's mood and creates a custom cocktail for them.

“It gives us the recipe and it brings the information to the robot, and the robot makes the cocktail based on this AI,” Ryu said.

Another exhibitor, FANUC, unveiled its sandwich-making simulator.

“Components of the sandwich can be randomly placed into the work cell, and the robots can find them utilizing vision,” said FANUC Vice President Lou Finazzo. “Then they assemble them in the right sequence.”

Finazzo said as a manufacturer, Automate is especially rewarding.

“You can come here and see current best practices if you need to improve or if you have challenges in your own organizations, or you can see where the future's gonna be potentially in your industry,” he said.

Association for Advancing Automation President Jeff Burnstein said the show allows people to get a close up look of the latest in robotics, artificial intelligence and other technologies.

“You can do a lot of research online, but it's not the same as seeing them side by side, talking to the companies, and really being able to understand what a solution is,” Burnstein said.

Automate will take place at McCormick Place through Thursday.
