CHESTERFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – State officials gathered in Chesterfield Thursday to announce a new round of grant funding for Community Development Corporations (CDC) all over the state and discuss a possible new future for the funding model.

Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, State Housing Secretary Ed Augustus and a representatives from the Massachusetts CDC traveled to Chesterfield on Thursday to announce $12-million in funding for the Community Investment Tax Credit Program which matches private donations to CDCs with a state tax credit, effectively doubling the donation.

“It’s really meaningful because it provides flexible resources for CDC which are doing so much from housing to dealing with food security, child care,” said Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll.

No operation is more diverse than the Hilltown CDC, providing food delivery, transportation, housing development, elder and child care and business empowerment.

With a proven track record of building community from urban Boston to the rural hill towns, legislators are looking to double down on this tax credit program, including in the upcoming housing bond bill. The bill would make the program permanent and increase total funding from $12 to $15 million.

“This tax credit is a real tool for organizations like the CDC that adapt to the unique circumstances of the communities they serve,” said Secretary Augustus.

It’s all part of the upcoming Affordable Housing Bond Bill which Secretary Augustus told 22News they hope the Governor’s desk for a signature sometime next month. The CITC, a small portion of the $4-billion, which local CDC leadership things is a home run.

“I think it’s a really low risk proposal. We have many years of success so it’s transparent. I think if you can really demonstrate that it is working then yeah, you should get the reward,” said Dave Christopolis, Executive Director of Hilltown CDC.
