'What we built was really special.' Zoxx Social Club demolished for GM site redevelopment
JANESVILLE — A beloved southside bar that hosted karaoke nights, dart competitions and became a home to the misfits of Janesville and a deaf club, was reduced to rubble Thursday by the city to make way for redevelopment of the adjacent former GM Assembly Plant site, including a potential data center. The former owners and patrons watched as an excavator tore into it on Thursday morning. Andrew Sigwell, the former owner of Zoxx Social Club, 411 W. State St., watched the heavy equipment tear through the bar and garage that for generations had been a popular gathering place for GM workers, just steps from the main plant entrance, and in the nearly 20 years since the plant closed had continued to draw patrons from the surrounding neighborhood and beyond. Zoxx closed its doors last summer in preparation for the demolition, after the city purchased the GM site and surrounding properties, including the bar property. Sigwell reflected Thursday on the parallels in watching the GM plant come down in 2018, including remembering its large smokestack tumbling down. The events of Thursday were are a sad reminder of that day, he said. “It’s just sad, it was a part of history,” he

The Wisconsin Barbecue Stop Worth The Gas And The Appetite
Let me say this upfront: Wisconsin made me pull over for barbecue. And I’d do it again without hesitation. Somewhere between open roads and that quiet Midwestern calm, my appetite started calling the shots, and I followed it straight to a no-frills stop that smelled like patience, smoke, and very good decisions.

Across the Street: New owners reopen Milton bar and grill
MILTON -- Late last spring, when the bar and grill located at 229 N. Janesville Street in Milton closed, Jason and Mirenda McArdle wondered if it would ever open again. Living across the street for twenty years, they had seen several turnovers, especially in the last five or six years. What if this time, no one bought it? What would happen then? Jason and Mirenda didn’t want to find out. “When it sits empty,” said Mirenda, “it’s kind of like something is missing.” She and Jason talked, they planned, they talked some more. Then last fall, on October 8 they opened the doors to their new business, aptly named ‘Across the Street Bar & Grill.’ “Our hope is to make this a friendly local neighborhood bar,” said Mirenda. “That place to hang out and a place to have dinner.” The bar and grill is housed in a simple tan building with a green roof on Old Hwy. 26. A large tree had obscured much of the building from view until last fall, when it was removed because it posed a threat to the building’s roof. The tree’s absence has opened up the view of the building. Still, after the building
