Investment Alone Will Not Build a Better Dayton
There is something genuinely exciting about seeing investment return to Dayton. Vacant buildings are being restored, new housing is being constructed and properties that sat unused for years are finding new purposes. After decades of population loss, deindustrialization and disinvestment, Dayton should not reject development, nor should residents romanticize the economic conditions that left buildings vacant and neighborhoods without adequate resources. However, development should not force Dayton to become so unrecognizable that longtime residents no longer recognize their own city. As new apartments, hotels, restaurants and redevelopment projects continue to reshape parts of the city, Dayton should be asking a more important question than whether development is occurring. We should be asking whether the people who already call Dayton home are being meaningfully included in the future that development is creating.

Cincinnati Boomers Are Moving To This Ohio City Just An Hour Away With More Affordable Living
In U-Haul's 2026 "Midyear Migration Trends" report, a surprising city topped the list for baby boomers moving out of Cincinnati: Dayton, Ohio, where the population net gain surpassed those in more expected retirement destinations, like cities in Florida and North Carolina. Dayton is certainly close to Cincinnati, located about an hour's drive north, and the two Southwest Ohio metros have a lot in common. This includes a similar climate, with both cities seeing hot summers and some snow accumulation in the winter. They're also easy cities to get around in: The downtowns in both Dayton and Cincinnati are rated as a "Walker's Paradise" by Walk Score, and residents of both cities can take advantage of a robust public transportation system, too.
