Petoskey expands parking enforcement to collect unpaid tickets
With downtown parking at a premium, the City of Petoskey is taking a new approach to keeping spaces available for visitors while giving drivers with outstanding parking citations an opportunity to resolve their debts. The change is part of a new enforcement approach approved by the Petoskey City Council this summer, aimed primarily at drivers with multiple unpaid citations in an effort to collect delinquent fees. Ordinance 816 authorizes the city to immobilize and/or tow a vehicle when it has six or more unpaid parking violations totaling more than $100. The ordinance places towing costs on the vehicle's last titled owner. The goal, officials say, is to improve turnover in downtown parking spaces. Instead of employees occupying spaces in front of their workplaces for several hours, those spaces can be available to people shopping and dining downtown, said Petoskey’s Director of Parking, Mobility, & Accessibility, April Sanders. City Council approved a reprieve from late fees during August and September. We're getting sloppy in roundabouts, and the crash numbers show it
First a white BMW drifts in front of a work van − wrong place for a lane change, dipstick! − and there's a honk. Next, a white Ford Escape takes too much time to lurch into the roundabout. Honk! A white GMC pickup cuts off a sedan. Honk! A white Jeep slows almost to a stop to let someone in, and no, you're being clumsy, not courteous! There's a flow to be maintained! Honk, definitely. Plus a question: what's with all the white cars fouling things up? And another question on a recent Tuesday afternoon: given that we've had roundabouts in Michigan since 1999, shouldn't we be better at them? Stick around for a few tips, or perhaps reminders is a better word. As for this roundabout, you'll find it at 14 Mile and Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills. It's on the West Bloomfield border, and it's on a list: No. 4 among the 20 intersections with the most accidents statewide in 2025. The Free Press reported on the annual list when the current version was released a few weeks ago, and what brought me out to watch cars spin in a circle was a paradox. (Also, a Buick.

'I'm Going To Lose Business:' Shop Owners Irate Over Randolph Street Paid Parking
Business owners along Randolph Street west of Division are furious about the city’s recent implementation of paid parking there. Owners and managers of The Dairy Lodge, Slabtown Barber Shop, Sleder’s Family Tavern and several other longtime or newer businesses are upset they weren’t consulted about the change, critical of the format (visitors must pay by app or phone since there are no meters or pay stations) and/or worried the new setup will frustrate or deter customers.
