MDOT, police increase enforcement amid spike in work zone crashes
CHEBOYGAN — With the early onset of road construction season, the Michigan Department of Transportation has already recorded several crashes in work zones. A common cause for vehicle crashes in construction areas is due to speeding, MDOT officials said. Offenders caught speeding in construction zones face doubled fines and additional points on their driving records.

Woman to stand trial in death of baby found in Mackinac County 27 years ago
ST. IGNACE, MI— A former Newberry woman will stand trial for the death of a newborn found in a Mackinac County pit toilet in 1997. Nancy Gerwatowski, 60, is charged with open murder, involuntary manslaughter, and concealing the death of an individual. In June of 1997, the remains of an infant were found in a toilet at Garnet Lake Campground in Hudson Township. Police investigated, but no leads were developed.

Mackinaw City man arrested for home invasion of neighbor, police say
MACKINAW CITY — The Mackinaw City Police Department said Monday that a 39-year-old man from Mackinaw City has been arrested on home invasion charges. On Saturday, May 11, around 5:15 p.m., officers were sent to a residence in regards to a male allegedly making threats to harm others in the residence after a verbal altercation, police said. One of the individuals being threatened left to go to a neighbor’s residence. The neighbor went outside to try to calm down the upset male but was unsuccessful, police said. A short time later, the male opened the neighbor’s door, entered the residence and slammed the door shut, police said.
