The Burlington-Area Mexican Food Scene Grows in Unexpected Places
People love to grumble about the quality of Mexican food in Vermont, and for a long time, I’ve agreed with them. Our tacos have been Americanized to a level beyond Tex-Mex, and nobody needs them to be filled with mushroom chorizo. There’s been little hope of a well-made mole, let alone a blush-pink mole rosa.

Kismayo Kitchen Reopens in BTV on Riverside Ave — for Now
After more than a month closed, Kismayo Kitchen, the Somali American restaurant founded by the late Ahmed Omar, has reopened with new operators at 505 Riverside Avenue in Burlington. Omar’s widow, Anisa Mohamed, and her new business partners, siblings Maryan and Abdirisak Maalin, decided to continue running the restaurant on the property, even though it has qualified for a Federal Emergency Management Agency hazard mitigation grant buyout. The building will eventually be demolished and the property converted to green space, most likely in 2027, according to Scott Gustin, Burlington’s principal planner and zoning division manager.

Heady Topper is Still a Top Double IPA and an Inspiration
Few things are finer to hop heads than a can of Heady Topper. Now fans of the cans have a pair of new products to try. If you're not yet a member of the Cult of The Alchemist, here's a quick primer. John and Jen Kimmich opened The Alchemist as a brew pub in Waterbury, VT in 2003. By 2016, the venture had grown into a brewery and visitor center in Stowe, VT. They offer a variety of brews, but Heady Topper, their flagship Double IPA (Imperial IPA, technically) has become beloved the world over. It's crisp and hoppy and surprisingly smooth and one of the few pours to score a 100 in Beer Advocate. It's one of the best cans you could ever hope to crack.

Doughnuts on the Rise: Biting Into Three New Vermont Shops
Until recently, northern Vermont experienced a bit of a doughnut drought. Plenty of restaurants and bakeries make and sell doughnuts, but the tubular treats aren’t those businesses’ raison d’être. While Burlington doughnut whiz Miss Weinerz brings weekly selections to local cafés and markets, and other options pop up here and there, the city hasn’t had a dedicated doughnut shop since Doughnut Dilemma closed in 2017. Hangry the Donut Bar opened in a St. Albans storefront in early 2023 and quietly stopped operating by fall of the following year.
