High winds, drought elevate U.P. wildfire risk as crews battle Craig Lake blaze

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WBUP/WJMN) — State wildlife and forestry officials are urging residents across the Upper Peninsula to take extreme precautions this weekend as unseasonably warm temperatures, severe drought, and forecasted high winds create dangerous wildfire conditions. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced Friday that all burn permits across the region will be suspended beginning at midnight. Forecasters anticipate wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph by Saturday afternoon. DNR fire managers warned that gusts of that strength can carry burning embers for miles, while prolonged dry conditions have left ground fuels parched, causing active fires to burn deep into the soil layer. Aerial crews target Craig Lake fire The elevated warning comes as state and federal crews work to contain a 16-acre wildfire near Craig Lake State Park in Baraga and Marquette counties. Officials believe lightning sparked the fire earlier this week. While the blaze saw minimal growth heading into Friday evening, containment operations will resume in full force Saturday morning. Response efforts have included multi-agency aerial support, featuring water-scooping planes dispatched from Minnesota collecting water from nearby Lake Michigamme and a Michigan State Police helicopter conducting water drops over the fire line. First Alert Weather: Warm Sunday to turn to cool showers on Monday

WEATHER STORY: A strong high pressure system to our east will do its usual tricks to bring us record level heat this weekend. Highs are often born of the cold by making air dense and increasing pressure. The life cycle of a high, though, raises temperatures quickly by spinning us a southerly wind, allowing in extra solar radiation and by sinking air heating through compression to the tune of 5.5 degrees F per thousand feet of descent. This will all combine to push us in the 80’s this weekend which will raise fire threats. As early as Monday, the high will fade as its new found heat turns it into neutral pressure or even the start of a low. Speaking of lows, one of those from the west will be with us Monday to bring a rain chance and much cooler temperatures. Normals: 35 and 52.

Michigan DNR Concerned About Wildfires With Dry, Windy Forecast

Warm, dry weather and windy conditions are expected in the Upper Peninsula over the next few days, boosting the risk of a wildfire. “Grasses have dried out and leaves are starting to drop, which adds a layer of fuel that can feed and speed the spread of a wildfire,” said Paul Rogers, fire prevention specialist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. “Make sure to check for a burn permit before you burn any yard debris and be careful of heat or sparks from equipment and off-road vehicles.”

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Has Its Own Weather System: 8 Foggy Shoreline Towns Worth the Long Drive

Show up in the Upper Peninsula on the wrong week and you get a flat gray lake, a closed visitor center, and a town that feels shuttered for good reason. Show up on the right week and you get lake-effect fog rolling through pine trees at dawn, harbor lights diffused into halos, and a version of Michigan that looks nothing like the postcard. The Upper Peninsula runs on Lake Superior and Lake Michigan’s own moods, not a calendar, so timing matters here more than in most places. This guide leans on fog as the throughline for the spring and early-summer entries below, since that’s when the lake-to-air temperature gap is sharpest and most reliable. But the month-by-month rundown at the end covers the whole year, including seasons where snow, fall color, or plain good weather are the better reason to go. Treat the fog windows as general patterns based on typical lake-warming lag, not a guarantee for any specific date. Lake Superior in particular can ignore its own averages for days at a time.

Will northern lights appear in Michigan skies tonight? See forecast

Some Michigan residents could see northern lights Wednesday, Sept. 16, according to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) forecast. NOAA is predicting a G0 to G1 geomagnetic storm that could produce a Kp index of up to 4.67 Wednesday night, Sept. 16, leading to potentially strong aurora borealis, or northern lights, visibility in the Upper Peninsula and northern Michigan. Kp is an index used to indicate the severity of the global magnetic disturbances in near-Earth space, NOAA said. Kp ratings increase from zero to 9. NOAA is predicting minor geomagnetic storm impacts. However, local National Weather Service offices are predicting overcast skies and chances of rain showers overnight across the U.P. and northern Michigan. Planning a northern lights getaway? Book accommodations here Here's what to know about the northern lights forecast. When could the northern lights be visible? The northern lights could be visible in the Upper Peninsula and northern Michigan Wednesday night, Sept. 16, the SWPC said. Poor weather conditions could block visibility though, with local National Weather Service offices forecasting clouds and rain throughout the region. The aurora forecast calls for the Kp index to reach 4.67 after 7 p.m. Wednesday, which would boost the aurora, and remain
