CHARLOTTE ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Neighbors in northwest Charlotte have been waiting a week to get storm debris removed.

Tree limbs fell on the street and sidewalk…forcing people to walk around the clutter on Kentucky Avenue.

The City of Charlotte says its priority is getting the roads cleared first, but because so many trees fell during the storm last week, they haven’t even been able to do that just yet.

Next, the city will move to the sidewalks where limbs are blocking the walkway.

There are plenty of reminders from last Wednesday’s storm.

“It’s been over a week, no that’s not good,” said Lionel Black, who was visiting the Oakview Terrace neighborhood.

But neighbors are starting to wonder how long the tree limbs will be blocking the sidewalk.

“It’s dangerous, aggravating, it’s an eyesore, and kids could be falling, trip over stuff so it’s dangerous,” said Black.

The storm last Wednesday knocked down two big limbs onto sidewalks on Kentucky Avenue and one small tree came down and is blocking part of the sidewalk on Nelson Avenue.

“It makes the neighborhood look bad, that’s what it does make the neighborhood look bad, because won’t nobody do nothing about it,” said Caleb Tate, who lives in the neighborhood.

A neighbor says she reported the problems to the City of Charlotte, telling them that the storm debris is blocking the sidewalk, but the city says they’re swamped and getting trees out of the roads takes priority over removing them from sidewalks.

“Sometimes you just got to move it yourself, or you’ll be waiting for a while,” said Kuyasha West, another neighbor.

Two of the trees are at an apartment complex, but the other tree that lost a limb looks like it came from a tree that could be in the right-of-way next to the church property.

If a tree limb falls on a public sidewalk but comes from private property, the city says it will clear the debris from the sidewalk but put it back on private property for the owner to remove.

Neighbors say that for now, they’ll just keep the limbs out of the road and hope they’ll be cleared soon.

“They should’ve picked them up by now, it’s been a few days, it’s just dangerous out here, you got to be careful,” said Black.

Neighbors say this isn’t the first time it has taken a while to get storm debris cleared.

The City of Charlotte says to call 911 if a tree is blocking the road and 311 if it’s covering the sidewalk.
