CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Law enforcement officers stood on top of Dunkin’ Donuts’ rooftops across the state on Friday for a good cause.

This year marks the 21st year of the event, which is part of an effort to raise money for the Special Olympics Illinois. The fundraiser works to ensure that each athlete can compete at no cost.

Officers volunteer their time to collect donations throughout the day. They say it’s a small price to pay for the cause.

“It shows the community that these officers are out here volunteering out time. You know, because most of us are out here on our own time. We’re here just to raise money for the Special Olympics athletes. We’re out here because it’s a great cause,” said Micah McMahon of the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office. “The athletes are amazing, coming out here and doing it for them. We love to see the smiles on their faces.”

More than 350 Dunkin’ Donuts across Illinois took part in yesterday’s event. Together, they raised a total of more than one-million dollars for Special Olympics Illinois athletes.
