North Jersey doctor sentenced to over two years in prison for defrauding Amtrak of $1.3M

A New Jersey doctor has been sentenced to just over two years in prison for health care fraud in a scheme that targeted Amtrak and caused the rail system to lose more than $1.3 million, announced U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.

Muhammad Mirza, 51, of Cedar Grove, and his conspirators billed its health insurance plan with fraudulent claims for services that were never provided or were medically unnecessary, Sellinger said.

Amtrak employees were involved, as they were paid to allow Mirza and others to use their patient and insurance information to submit false and fraudulent claims, Sellinger said.

The scheme went on for five years, lasting from April 2017 through June 2022.

In addition to 26 months in prison, Mirza was sentenced to two years of supervised release and ordered to pay restitution of $1.37 million.
