Cathedral City's library will be used as a cooling center this summer. Here's what to know

The Cathedral City Library will be used as a cooling center starting in June, just in time for the Coachella Valley's notoriously hot summer.

Cooling centers provide people with somewhere to catch a break from the heat, and will usually be located at venues like libraries and senior centers. They are particularly critical for vulnerable communities like seniors and unhoused people, who may not have other options once the heat rises to dangerous levels. The Riverside County Community Action Partnership works with local agencies like Cathedral City to open these centers.

Cathedral City has not had a cooling center in a few years, but is working with the county and library to provide one this year. Here's what you need to know:

What will the Cathedral City cooling center's hours be?

The center will operate from June 1 to Oct. 15, according to a city staff presentation on May 8. It will be open during the following regular library hours:

    • 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
    • Noon to 8 p.m. on Wednesday
    • 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday
    • Closed on Friday

Assistant City Manager Anne Ambrose said the city can make sure there are printouts of alternative locations for cooling centers for when the Cathedral City library is closed. This information is also available on CAP's website at capriverside.org/cool-centers .

Where will the Cathedral City cooling center be located?

The center will be in the library, which is located at 33-520 Date Palm Drive in Cathedral City.

What resources will be available at the cooling center?

CAP will provide the center with supplies like water, snacks and miniature fans. Library staff will be the ones supervising it.
