Fatal head-on crash on River Street in Carthage

CARTHAGE, Mo. (KOAM) - Just after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday reports of a serious head-on crash on River St just south of Wendy Lane alerted E-911.

Carthage Fire Dept, Carthage Police , and Mercy AMB responded.

On scene we learn from Det Sgt Aaron Kmick , a southbound passenger car crossed the center of the road and struck an SUV head-on.

Single occupant in each vehicle, both drivers were rushed to area hospitals.

Det Sgt Kmick tells us one person did not survive.

The person driving the SUV suffered moderate injuries.

" Next of kin have been notified ," he says. But he anticipates they will release more details tomorrow.

Carthage Police responded to map the scene for crash investigation as River Street was closed from Gene Taylor Way (south end) and Wendy Lane (north end).

They utilized drone to mark points for crash-mapping which is protocol in the City of Carthage with serious crashes. The roadway was closed both directions about 3 hours. River St was reopened to all traffic about 8:30 p.m.

M&M Wrecker were summoned to remove both crashed vehicles from the scene.
