Businesses evacuated after propane found leaking from tanks in Sacramento
Leaking propane tanks led to the evacuation of four to five businesses near Florin Road on Saturday, Sacramento Fire Department officials said. People at a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 3409 52nd Ave. reported smelling a possible gas leak, Capt. Nathan Green said. The Sacramento Fire Department responded to the incident around 4 p.m. Firefighters and PG&E crews determined the smell was coming from leaking propane in a nearby recycling yard. About 30 to 40 propane tanks, ranging in size from five to 15 gallons, were found, though not all were leaking, Green said. “Some of them are venting off,” Green said. Firefighters did not know why the tanks were leaking. The church and three to four nearby businesses were evacuated, according to Green. A hazardous materials crew on the scene will determine how to safely deal with the leaking propane.
